1st Centro Spelling Bee

The Rotary Club of Sta. Rosa Centro held its very first CENTRO Spelling Bee contest on February 7, 2015 at the Gabaldon Hall of Sta. Rosa Elementary School Central 2. This forms part of the club’s thrusts towards Literacy and the Youth, both very important areas of focus of Rotary International. A total of 17 schools sent their best spellers to compete; with 11 grade school contestants and 13 high school contestants.  With their respective coaches, teachers, parents, and friends, the students reported to the contest venue as early as 8:00 a.m.  After some preliminaries in the program and introduction of the contestants and their coaches, the contest proper began with the elimination round.  Director Cecile Gabatan stood as the quiz master. The grade school contestants started off with an easy round of 15 words, after which the contestants were trimmed down to eight.  Next was the difficult round with 12 words wherein four contestants emerged at the finalists.  The same process was done for the 13 high school contestants. During the short break, program emcee PP Liza Pineda introduced the members of the board of judges namely, Ms. Edds Addun from One Meralco Foundation, Ms. Nympha Madulid from  SM Foundation and PDG Chit Lijauco for the Rotary Club of Sta. Rosa Centro. In the championship round, the four finalists of each level were asked to verbally spell words one by one.  After a tussle of wits, a champion was proclaimed, as follows: Ms. Venice Sofia G. Garces, Grade 6, Colegio de Sta. Rosa de Lima – Champion, Grade School Category Ms. Dana Rei S. Castro, 4th year High School, Casa del Niño Montessori – Champion, High School Category The champions were given 5,000 pesos cash from the Leon Arcillas Foundation, 4,000 pesos gift certificate from SM City, a tablet, and a trophy. The following students were the finalists, who all won 2,000 pesos cash from the Leon Arcillas Foundation: Grade School finalists: Xyra Mikaela C. Cledera – Central 1 Don Rich Medina  – Blessed Christian School Alexa C. Obligar – Laguna Bel-Air Science School High School finalists: Blaise Therese F. Bellosillo – Canossa School Carlo P. Miras – Laguna Bel-Air Science School Pamela Rae R. Madrigal – Holy Rosary College President Arlene Arcillas gave a brief inspirational talk, wherein she stressed the importance of education.  She thanked all the schools that participated, in particular the coaches and students, for taking part in the first Centro Spelling Bee.  Finally she announced that all the participants will receive two Enchanted Kingdom tickets each, plus additional prize money from  Leon Arcillas Foundation of 5,000 pesos for the champions and 1,000 pesos for the finalists, which was greeted by loud cheers and applause from the audience. The Rotary Club of Sta. Rosa thanked the generous sponsors of the 1st Centro Spelling Bee, namely, One Meralco Foundation, SM Foundation and Leon Arcillas Foundation.  Certificates were handed to all the participants.
