This project gave the Centronians more than what they bargained for. The first leg of
Operasyon Linis para sa Baybayin ng Lawa ng Laguna (Operation Cleanup for the Lakeside of Laguna Bay) held at Bgy. Sinalhan of the City of Santa Rosa presented a huge challenge to their mission of cleaning up the place.
In the first place, bad weather prevented the group from going to the lakeside and
cleaning up debris that would otherwise have ended up in the lake. “The floodwater stopped us from going nearer the lake,” said Christine dela Paz, a proposed member who is on her second activity already. (The club’s membership requirement is at least three meetings—be it regular meeting, fellowship, or project participation.)
But where they stood, at the basketball court adjacent to the barangay hall, was
already in dire need of cleanup. And so, they did what they embarked on to do. Protected only by plastic gloves and masks, the group stooped down to place the collected waste in large garbage bags.
In just half an hour, the group gathered 23.7kg of recyclable waste and 118.1kg of
residual waste. At this rate, a representative from the World Wide Fund for Nature commented, “This collected waste vis-a-vis the collection rate indicate that this place is in need of cleaning”.
